Award European inventor year 2024
On 09 July 2024 the EPO has revealed the winners of the European Inventor Prize 2024:
- Industry: Team made up of Italy's Fiorenzo Dioni and Germany's Richard Oberle;
- Research: Cordelia Schmid (Germany);
- Small and Medium Business: Olga Malinkiewicz (Poland) and her team;
- No European countries: Masato Sagawa (Japan);
- Career Award: Dame Carol Robinson (Great Britain).
- Young Inventors:
1º - Rochelle Niemeijer (Netherlands)
2º - Valentyn Frechka (Ukraine)
3º - equipa composta por Khaoula Bem Ahmed, Ghofrane Ayari, Souleima Bem Temime e Sirine Ayari (Tunisia).
European Counterfeiting Observatory Report 2024
In January 2024, the European Observatory for the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights launched a new report on the economic impact of counterfeiting on sales in the EU in three sectors:
• Clothing: It is estimated that the clothing industry will lose almost EUR 12 billion in revenue/year in the period from 2018 to 2021.
• Cosmetics: Sales of cosmetic products lost due to counterfeiting are estimated at EUR 3 billion.
• Toys: Toy sales are estimated to have lost almost EUR 1 billion in sales.
SME Fund 2024
The European Union's new SME Fund to support the protection of industrial property rights for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) began on 22 January 2024.
As in previous years, this subsidy scheme, promoted by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), will allow SMEs to partially reimburse expenses.
The overall aim of this European Commission measure, implemented by the EUIPO, is to enable a faster recovery of the European Union's economy and greater resilience on the part of SMEs.
The estimated budget for this initiative in 2024 is 20 million euros.
